Perched on beautiful Shapridge Hill, at the end of a quiet track, the properties are a haven of peace and tranquility. Footpaths lead from your door onto a network of forest paths.
The local town of Mitcheldean (3 miles away) provides good local amenities, including pubs, a Coop., a greengrocer, a butcher, a Post Office, a library with drop-in internet access, and several takeaways.
Perfect for the keen birdwatcher, as an abundance of birdlife can be observed from our hide; from nuthatch to green woodpecker and if you are lucky, even red kite! In summer the house martins,
swallows and swifts put on a spectacular flying display as they dip and dive over the wildlife pond and garden. Foxes, rabbits, badgers and bats all visit the garden too, so don’t forget your binoculars!
There are many outdoor activities available in the Forest; hire a canoe or a kayak and paddle down the Wye, or hire a mountain bike and take to the cycle tracks which lead you though heart of the Forest and mile after mile of beautiful woodland.
For those interested in history, within half an hour there are the Dean Heritage Centre and the border castles of Chepstow and Goodrich to name but a few. A bit further afield Hereford cathedral where you can view the famous Mappa Mundi, Tewkesbury Abbey and Gloucester
Cathedral are well worth the visit. Within an hour's drive you could take in the Cotswolds, the Brecon Beacons, or the Malvern Hills.
Come rain or shine, heading westbound to Wales or eastbound to the Cotswolds or staying in the local area, there are some very fine roads to ride close by. The area also has an abundance of biker friendly hospitality venues waiting to meet your culinary needs.
Guided tours are available on pre-advised bookings. Trailer recovery may be available in an emergency (or pre-booked movements).
Two of our properties can accept small well-behaved dogs which must be notified before booking confirmation. Additional resources are provided in the unit (throws for the sofa etc.) and guests are obliged to look after them ensuring they are supervised at all times. Dogs are allowed in the Wildlife Garden and can be exercised on the common area next to the properties.
There is a large enclosed dog training area a short walk from the property where expert support can be obtained from Foxglove Dog Trainer.
There are a few bikes available* for free use to guests staying at the Cottages. These may be pre-booked as part of the initial booking process.
* we do not maintain two bikes per property so they may not always be available on your requested day.
There are a few options of circular walks direct from the Cottages which we can provide advice on. If you wish to venture further afield we have OS maps of the local area you may loan.
Three hard standing (loose surface) parking spaces are located at the top of the property (one per accommodation). The lock boxes for the accommodation keys are immediately adjacent to the parking area.
Walking down the pathway from the car parking area you will see the cottages approx 50 metres away. A box/luggage carrier is available in the car port for those wishing to use it to transport their personal effects to the Wren/Robin Cottages down the slope.
The area is not particularly well covered by public transport but is covered by Stagecoach. You can access their website to identify services that may be of interest.
The two nearest train stations are Lydney (9.4 miles) and Gloucester (10 miles).
Gloucester is the closest city to the location, sitting to the east of the Forest of Dean. Traveling further east, Cheltenham sits twenty miles away.
The main roads are the A40, sitting to the west and north, and the A48, sitting to the east of the cottages. The rest of the local roads are a mix of lower-grade A roads and B roads, with some of the local roads being testing at the best of times and weather conditions.
The rental properties have a single hard-standing car parking space each. More secure parking for motorbikes can be found at the bottom of the hill (only for the braver riders). Those arriving on bicycles can make use of a lockable shed.
The nearest airport is Gloucester Airport (19 miles), with the nearest regional airport (Bristol) some 50 miles to the south on the far side of the city.
We prefer to receive payment directly via BACS although we can send a payment link via SumUp if you prefer. If you book via an aggregating/listing site (AirBnB etc.) you may pay directly on their platforms.
If you need more information about payment links by SumUp, please click on the logo to read more information in the 'Paying a SumUp merchant' section of their Pay Support Centre.
All three rental properties sit adjacent to the main residence (Fairlea) at the end of Church Lane. Access and egress to the complex is via a single track, partially unmade road, and can be quite bumpy if you come down too quickly. Access and egress to the two cottages is by foot on a sloped solid surface pathway.
The cottages are both old and very traditional and, as such, have narrow steep staircases that may not support any person with limited mobility. Whilst the Little Owl is a single-storey property it has a large step proceeding the door. Parking is on a loose surface hard-standing area at the highest point of the complex with no flat access/egress to the cottages.
Plans: While we cannot make any reasonable adjustments on the cottages, we're investigating the possibility of purchasing some additional land to facilitate a single surface condition at the Little Owl. This would allow a person to park next to the unit and walk in on a raised decking platform. Changes to the width of the doorway may also be necessary for wheelchair users.
